The best-selling minivan(s) in America in 2011 were the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. Only they weren't.

The Toyota Sienna was the best-selling minivan in the USA in 2011, beating the Grand Caravan - just the Grand Caravan - by 562 sales, a scant 0.5% advantage. The Honda Odyssey wasn't far behind in third; Odyssey sales slid 1% to 107,068. 2010's best-selling minivan, by any definition, was the Chrysler Town & Country, but sales of that van plunged 16% in 2011. The overall new vehicle market was up 10%.

So what's this about the Sienna not being the best-selling minivan in America? Think about it: separating the Town & Country from the Grand Caravan is like separating the scoring achievements of Henrik and Daniel Sedin. One does not produce without the other. Together, Chrysler's two vans found 205,182 buyers in 2011. One might ask if Chrysler would have sold that many minivans if the two vans became a single van. In fact, Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne asked just that, and the response is becoming a policy - there'll only be one brand selling vans for the company in the near future.

Officially, yes, the Toyota Sienna was the best-selling minivan in 2011, and rightly so. It's GoodCarBadCar.net's favourite offering, aside from the too-small-for-most-buyers Mazda 5. But more accurately, the Drysler Grand & Town was America's favourite minivan in 2011.

The S2000, long since cancelled by Honda, found two buyers in the United States in December 2011. Odd, but true. In total, Honda sold five S2000s in 2011. This is fairly irrelevant information, so let's move on to 2011's bigger, more important sports car news.

2011's German roadster contest was won by the BMW Z4. Not far behind was the Mercedes-Benz SLK. Combined, Porsche's Boxster and Cayman found 3150 U.S. buyers. The Audi TT surged at the end of the year but wasn't a candidate for German roadster sales leadership.

The best-selling American muscle car in America was the Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro beat the Ford Mustang by an astonishing 17,811 sales in 2011. The Mustang range is better than ever, but sales slid 4.4% last year.

There's one other car, besides the S2000, appearing in this month's first sporty car sales table that doesn't normally show up. Subaru USA broke down the Impreza's total sales, providing us with a chance to see how the WRX measures up. There are no Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution numbers with which to compare the WRX's (if you know where Evo sales figures can be found, do share), but the WRX did end 2011 with more sales than the... Chevrolet Corvette. Although the WRX reported a terrific year-over-year improvement, the Subaru still couldn't compete with the Volkswagen Golf GTI in terms of outright volume.

Sales of Audi's R8 have never been higher. And December 2011 was a notable month for the R8, as Audi's Lamborghini-derived supercar had its best month of the year, and its second-best month ever, after November 2008. The R8 did not prove to be a Porsche 911-beater, not even in this, its best year. 

Because of the BMW 6-Series's gigantic year-over-year boost, the R8 didn't come close to matching the 6er's total, either. BMW's 723 6-Series sales in December helped it to a 911-crushing experience, but year-to-date figures show the 911 to be America's favourite premium sports cars. And the new 911 will be an even better car. Audi would need a much-less expensive R8 model to compete with Porsche's basic Carrera and the 911's incredible sales totals.

December was the best month yet for the Lexus LFA. You'll also notice the Cadillac XLR in the table. It's there just to show its 12 2011 sales - no XLRs were sold in December. Nissan's GT-R beat the Audi R8 by 149 sales in 2011. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was an increasingly popular proposition; the Mercedes-Benz SL and CL less so. And Dodge Viper sales shot up to 36 in December. Dodge must be finding leftover Vipers in the same lot Honda's finding S2000s.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.

Although December's leadership trophy was handed to the BMW 7-Series, America's large luxury segment was, in total volume terms, led by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in 2011. 

2010's second-place Lexus LS dropped to third spot behind the 7-Series. Sales of the four leading cars all slid in 2011. The Lexus LS's drop was the worst, but Porsche Panamera sales fell 11.1% to 6879, not much better than half what Porsche was able to achieve with the Cayenne SUV.

The 50,939 sales achieved by the six cars in the category (excluding the similarly vast but much less expensive Hyundai Equus) mean overall large luxury car sales fell 1.4% in 2011 despite the Audi A8's monstrous year-over-year increase and the Jaguar XJ's notable gains.

Its 329-unit lead over the Cadillac Escalade at the end of November wasn't solid enough to deliver victory to the Mercedes-Benz GL at the end of the calendar year. Admittedly, Cadillac has three Escalades with which to do battle. 

The best-selling Escalade is the regular-wheelbase 'Slade. With 59% of the sales, that Escalade's 15,079 are good enough for second place among jumbo lux sport-utes, but not nearly enough to fend off the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. All three Escalade family members suffered year-over-year declines in December and in 2011. The Avalanche-based Escalade EXT was down just 1.5% in December and just 2.2% in 2011.

Compare that with Mercedes-Benz's significant year-over-year boosts. The G-Wagen was up 29.6%, the GL-Class climbed 26.1%. This all occurred in an overall market which grew 10.3%.

Ten of the SUVs and crossovers listed in the tables below reported year-over-year gains in 2011 that outpaced the new vehicle market's increase in the United States. The BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Audi Q7, BMW X5, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Land Rover LR4, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg all topped the 10.3% bump posted by the American new vehicle market.

The Cadillac SRX was a tremendously hot buy in December, but it also managed to top all its European rivals over the course of 2011. Only the Lexus RX350/RX450h was able to stop the Cadillac from becoming America's most popular premium utility vehicle in 2011.

The premium utility vehicles which will be known for reporting the worst year-over-year records include Infiniti's EX, Land Rover's LR2, Acura's worst-selling ZDX, Lexus's forgettable GX, and Lincoln's ugly MKT.

One might question how lucrative a business can be made by offering less practical and highly sporty SUVs. Together, the ZDX, BMW X6, and Infiniti EX found only 17,695 buyers in 2011. All three of those vehicles found fewer buyers this year than in 2010. The boxier Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne combined for 28,311 sales; both reported impressive year-over-year gains. Speaking of the Cayenne, the German trio made up by the aforementioned Porsche, Volkswagen's Touareg, and Audi's Q7 amassed 29,511 U.S. sales in 2011.

The "small" and "midsize" titles mean little in the two tables displayed below. These are, for the most part, jacked up cars with varying dimensions, none too big; none too small.
