Large Luxury Car Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

2017 Porsche Panamera
A huge uptick in BMW 7-Series sales bolstered the 7er's Mercedes-Benz S-Class-leading segment in the United States in June 2016.

7-Series volume jumped 69% to 1408 units, very nearly enough to catch the declining S-Class. Sales of the S-Class tumbled 20% in the first-half of 2016 – the 7% slide in June was not so bad.

Porsche's 16% June increase in Panamera sales was merely a blip. Panamera volume is down 12% this year. Panamera sales in 2016 are on track to fall 43% below the 2010 peak.

A new Panamera for next year has already been revealed, and it's not ugly even when viewed from the rear, as seen above.

Audi lost half its A8 volume in May. Jaguar XJ volume slid 8% last month but increased slightly in the first-half. Lexus' once popular LS is steadily losing all manner of popularity.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The BMW 6-Series is listed here as it now features a "mainstream" sedan bodystyle in addition to its two-door variants, just like the larger S-Class. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. Tesla, unfortunately, doesn't release model-specific monthly U.S. sales data, but WSJ.com estimates 2200 June Tesla Model S sales, 12,450 YTD.

Canadian sales of the new BMW 7-Series exploded with a 165% year-over-year increase in May 2016.

45 copies of the sixth-generation 7-Series were sold in Canada in May. Mercedes-Benz, however, sold twice that many S-Classes in a particularly poor month for the big Benz.

The sector controlled by these two stalwarts took a collective 26% tumble in May 2016. Some of the blame for that decline can be placed upon the quirky auto sales calendar: "May 2016" didn't begin until May 3, 2016, shortening the auto sales calendar by two days.

For the most part, however, we simply saw lower numbers. Lower numbers from the Audi A8. Lower numbers from the BMW 6-Series. Lower numbers from the Jaguar XJ, Lexus LS, and of course, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which generated 143 sales in May 2015.

Yet the 7-Series still played second-fiddle to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class during a month in which S-Class volume tumbled 21%.

USA large luxury car sales chart May 2016
More than 1500 copies of the biggest Mercedes-Benz car were sold in the United States in May, just the second time this year Mercedes-Benz USA has topped the 1500-unit mark. In 2015's first five months, Mercedes-Benz averaged 1800 monthly S-Class sales.

May was a particularly poor month for the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ, as well. But Lexus LS volume rose to a five-month high of 712 units after averaging barely more than 400 monthly sales in the first-third of 2016.

Consumers interested in high-end luxury continue to be far more interested in top-tier SUVs.

The Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class – just that trio – has already combined for 1968 sales in the first four months of 2016, more than double the total achieved by these cars.

And at the high end, Mercedes-Benz S-Class volume plunged 34%, a loss of 692 sales compared with April 2015.

Large Luxury Car Sales In Canada - November 2015 YTD

2013 Lexus LS460
Year-over-year, Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class tumbled 28% in November 2015, a loss of 41 units compared with November 2014. That's more lost sales than most of the total monthly sales achieved by most of the S-Class's direct rivals.

Yet even with that sharp 28% drop, the S-Class easily outsold the next two best-selling cars in the class. In a segment that's lost sales during 2015's first 11 months, Canadian sales of the S-Class have grown 5% to 1056 units so far this year. Unless December volume plunges far further than November's total, 2015 sales of the S-Class will climb to an eight-year high.

BMW, the closest challenger to the S-Class's throne, after posting a 16% 7-Series sales loss in 2015's first ten months, posted a 52% increase in November. The new 7-Series is a technological tour de force, but that may not be nearly enough to unseat the S-Class, which has defined the class for decades.

Meanwhile, we profiled the Lexus LS last week on AutoFocus.ca's list of the 25 most ignored new vehicles in Canada.
