Large Car Sales In America - June 2016 YTD

A 47% year-over-year jump to 12,335 sales in June 2016 produced GM's best month of Chevrolet Impala sales since December 2014.

The Impala crushed its competitors in June, outselling the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 combined, finishing with nearly four times as many sales as the Ford Taurus, claiming 23 times more sales than the Hyundai Azera/Kia Cadenza Korean tag team.

Impala sales are down 3% through the first-half of 2016, however. Based on the first-half's pace, 2016 will be the Impala's sixth consecutive year of decline.

Unless June represents a turnaround. And that is possible.

It's possible that May's 54% drop was simply an anomaly of production and inventory and calendar quirks. 

Or, the Impala, like the majority of its direct and indirect rivals, will continue to suffer as consumers veer towards Nissan Muranos, Subaru Outbacks, Toyota Highlanders, and other high-riders.

The Chrysler 300 continued to buck the downward trend of its segment with greater U.S. sales success in May 2016. 

Sales of the 300 jumped 39% to 5598 units in May as GM rivals tumbled by more than half, as Ford lost more than one-third of its May Taurus sales; as Toyota lost nearly one-third of its Avalon sales.

The 300's Dodge Charger partner likewise posted an improvement in May, albeit a more modest 5% uptick. May 2016 was an abbreviated sales month for the U.S. auto industry with only 24 selling days, down from 26 in May 2015. This skews the figures somewhat. On a daily selling rate basis, sales of the Hyundai Genesis (coupe included) actually increased.

And while "May" volume from the Nissan Maxima shot up 219%, the Maxima's daily selling rate jumped 245%. 

The Maxima came within 566 sales of catching the 300 and 220 sales of catching the Chevrolet Impala.

Nevertheless, even the 300 and Maxima aren't selling at the levels we used to expect. 

Chrysler is on pace to sell, perhaps, 70,000 300s in 2016. Chrysler sold more than 120,000 300s in 2007. 

Maxima volume is on track to rise to above 60,000 units for the first time since 2010, but that's down from nearly 100,000 Maximas sold in America in 2002.

U.S. sales of full-size, volume brand sedans slid 3% in April 2016 in large part due to sharp decreases at General Motors. Both the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala, presumably due to GM's de-emphasized fleet business, lost significant numbers of April sales in 2016: 1772 for the Buick; 2689 for the Chevrolet.

But U.S. sales of the Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, Kia Cadenza, and Toyota Avalon all fell below their April 2015 totals. And the Hyundai Azera, which Hyundai-Kia will soon forget in the U.S. in favour of the Cadenza – just as the partners have already done in Canada – tumbled 44% in April.

On the flip side, April 2016 was the Chevrolet SS's best sales month yet. The SS remains a low-volume car – only 592 were sold in April. But the SS has historically averaged barely more than 200 monthly SS sales.

The Chrysler 300 also continued its upward trend, and the Nissan Maxima – all-new for model year 2015 – has more than doubled its April and year-to-date sales.

Chevrolet Impala volume jumped 11%, year-over-year, to 10,494 units in the United States in November 2015. Impala sales, down 15% over the first 11 months of 2015, have now increased in four consecutive months in comparison with 2014.

The Impala is clearly not the force it was, on pure volume terms, that it was just a few years ago. GM will likely sell fewer than 120,000 Impalas by year's end. More than 300,000 were sold in 2007. 2015 will be the fifth consecutive year of decline.

But the Impala, now a less fleet-friendly competitor in a vehicle category considered far less interesting to buyers, isn't rare in its decline. 

Buick LaCrosse volume is down 16% this year. The Chrysler 300 is down 2%. Ford Taurus volume has tumbled 24%. Hyundai Azera sales are down 21%. The Kia Cadenza? Down 23%. The Nissan Maxima? Down 25%. The Toyota Avalon? Down 11%.

Some of those cars are older designs or in transition to a new generation. Others are new or refreshed. It matters little. Segment-wide volume is down 12% in a booming market.

Sales of full-size, volume brand cars rose 4% in October 2015, nearly matching the rate of growth achieved by the overall passenger car market.

Despite sharp gains from the Hyundai Azera and soon-to-be-replaced Buick LaCrosse, sales of the category increased by nearly 1700 units. Thank the Dodge Charger's 24.5% leap forward for much of the progress. Combined, the Charger and its Chrysler 300 sibling outsold the Chevrolet Impala by 1432 units in October.

Through the first ten months of 2015, the FCA fraternal twins outsold the Impala 26,423 units. (GM sold more than 35,000 extra LaCrosses.) Impala sales, down 17% this year, are on track to be nearly two-thirds lower than they were in pre-recession 2007.

True, Chevrolet is targeting a different buyer now with a more upmarket Impala. But the change is striking, nevertheless, and speaks to the larger theme at play. Many buyers who want this kind of space and are willing to spend this kind of money are more apt to choose a roomy crossover, not a full-size sedan.
