Large Luxury Car Sales In Canada - May 2016 YTD

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class white
Canadian sales of the new BMW 7-Series exploded with a 165% year-over-year increase in May 2016.

45 copies of the sixth-generation 7-Series were sold in Canada in May. Mercedes-Benz, however, sold twice that many S-Classes in a particularly poor month for the big Benz.

The sector controlled by these two stalwarts took a collective 26% tumble in May 2016. Some of the blame for that decline can be placed upon the quirky auto sales calendar: "May 2016" didn't begin until May 3, 2016, shortening the auto sales calendar by two days.

For the most part, however, we simply saw lower numbers. Lower numbers from the Audi A8. Lower numbers from the BMW 6-Series. Lower numbers from the Jaguar XJ, Lexus LS, and of course, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which generated 143 sales in May 2015.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not made available in Canada. Tesla doesn't release a monthly Model S sales report, either. ANDC estimates for Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce were 33, 90, 70, and 35 units respectively, in the first five months of 2016. Tesla sold 570 cars in the first four months of 2016. Total Maserati volume is reported, but not by specific models. GCBC shows the Cadillac XTS, Cadillac CT6, Hyundai Equus, and Kia K900 with midsize luxury cars not because of their size, but because the price points are much more directly comparable.

Although Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class tumbled 20% in April 2016, specifically, sales of the S-Class are rising in the early part of 2016. The new sixth-generation BMW 7-Series nearly tripled its April volume and is up 69% in the first-third of 2016.

Consumers interested in high-end luxury continue to be far more interested in top-tier SUVs.

The Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class – just that trio – has already combined for 1968 sales in the first four months of 2016, more than double the total achieved by these cars.

Large Luxury Car Sales In Canada - November 2015 YTD

2013 Lexus LS460
Year-over-year, Canadian sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class tumbled 28% in November 2015, a loss of 41 units compared with November 2014. That's more lost sales than most of the total monthly sales achieved by most of the S-Class's direct rivals.

Yet even with that sharp 28% drop, the S-Class easily outsold the next two best-selling cars in the class. In a segment that's lost sales during 2015's first 11 months, Canadian sales of the S-Class have grown 5% to 1056 units so far this year. Unless December volume plunges far further than November's total, 2015 sales of the S-Class will climb to an eight-year high.

BMW, the closest challenger to the S-Class's throne, after posting a 16% 7-Series sales loss in 2015's first ten months, posted a 52% increase in November. The new 7-Series is a technological tour de force, but that may not be nearly enough to unseat the S-Class, which has defined the class for decades.

Meanwhile, we profiled the Lexus LS last week on AutoFocus.ca's list of the 25 most ignored new vehicles in Canada.

2016 BMW 7-Series
Mercedes-Benz Canada reported a modest 2% year-over-year S-Class sales increase in October 2015 even as Canada's overall car market tumbled 10% and the S-Class's own category slid 1%.

But it wasn't so much the S-Class's ability to expand its sales – by just two units, after all – that impressed in October. Rather, Mercedes-Benz sold 106 copies of their flagship car, nearly triple the total achieved by its chief rival, the BMW 7-Series.

In fact, the S-Class outsold the 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, Audi A8, and Lexus LS combined in October 2015.

Not since June of last year has the Lexus flagship generated more than 20 sales. In each of the last three months, Toyota Canada sold the LS in single-digit numbers.

S-Class sales remain down on a year-to-date basis following 2014's full launch year of the segment standard bearer.

All of the S-Class's direct rivals are faltering as well, many in a worse way. BMW's 6-Series, which takes into account not only the Gran Coupe (which is a sedan) but an actual coupe and convertible, is up 17% this year.

May 2015, however, was a superior month than last year for these big sedans (and coupes) from luxury brands. Even compared with May 2013, their sales were up 21%.
