Large Car Sales In America - March 2014 YTD

Sales of volume-brand large cars slid 6.5% in March 2014 fell 13.3% in the first quarter of the year, a drop of more than 21,000 units compared with the first quarter of 2013.

The Chevrolet Impala is the top-selling car in the category, but like nearly every one of its rivals, Impala sales are down sharply in 2014. Combined, the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger fraternal twins outsold the Impala by 3231 units in March; 1098 units in Q1.

The high-priced Chevrolet SS is as rare as everybody thought it'd be, and not just by volume-brand standards. Compare the SS with premium products like GM's own Cadillac CTS and you'll see that only one SS was sold in March for every 8.3 CTSs.

Kia hasn't come close to the 1650-unit Cadenza sales pace from last summer since, well, last summer. 13% of the Ford Taurus's March volume was Police Interceptor-derived. The Hyundai Azera's 32% decline in March was the worst of any car in the group.

Through three months, 7.5% of the passenger cars sold in America are represented in this list of eleven actively-marketed large cars. The decline displayed in this vehicle category isn't unique among cars, although it is pronounced. Automotive News says passenger car sales are down 4.1% this year, and the 0.5% increase in March was very small in comparison to the 5.7% year-over-year increase in overall new vehicle sales.

Mini USA Car Sales Charts - March 2014 YTD

Mini USA's sales figures continue to be all but irrelevant in the lead-up to the launch of BMW's third hardtop Mini. Sales of the "original" Cooper Hardtop were down 75% to just 687 units in March 2014. Had that decline not occurred, Mini sales would have been down 6% to 5718 units in March.

Instead, with that 2063-unit loss, Mini USA sales slid 40%. 

Sales of the Paceman were level at 169. The Paceman, Mini's newest vehicle line, along with the other two newbies - Coupe and Roadster - accounted for just 11% of the brand's March output. They won't be replaced after their current iterations die off.

The Countryman kept Mini dealers afloat last month, however, with a slight 100-unit increase. The Countryman generated 51% of Mini's U.S. March volume.

Fiat sold 3316 500s in March plus 1422 500Ls. Volkswagen sold 2131 hardtop Beetles and 1301 Beetle Convertibles.

Large SUV Sales In America - March 2014 YTD

While consumers wait for the Tahoe or Yukon XL of their choice to be readily available at a nearby dealership, sales of America's seven volume-brand full-size SUVs are sliding. March 2014 sales were down 2%; year-to-date volume is off 11%.

The Chevrolet Tahoe was the segment's top seller in March. GM's market share in the category was 71.1%, down from 74.5% in March 2013. Only the Yukon and Ford's Expedition reported year-over-year increases.

Sales of the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia, the oft-forgotten import-branded pair, were down  1% in March 2014.

Ford still hasn't delivered enough new Transit Connects to dealers to match 2013's first quarter U.S. sales pace, but Ford is still the controller of America's commercial van market.

Together, the Transit Connect and top-selling E-Series owned 51% of the commercial van segment in March 2014. Sales of these vans were up 12.4% in March and rose 6.7% in the first quarter of 2014. 

Small vans - Transit Connect, NV200, Ram C/V - generated 17% of the category's total sales. Of that group, the declining Transit Connect's market share was 61%.

Top 20 Best-Selling Cars In America - March 2014

Toyota suffered from a slow start to 2014 but rebounded in March, most apparently with Camry results. 

The Camry was trailing the Nissan Altima at the end of February, and amidst news that there'll be a significant update to the Camry for MY2015, March sales took off, rising 11% to 41,953 units.

The Camry was joined in the top 20 by two other Toyotas, the fifth-ranked Corolla and 18th-ranked Prius. There are also three Chevrolets in the top 17, including the surging Chevrolet Cruze, the biggest year-to-date gainer of any car in the top nine. (Sales of March's tenth-ranked Nissan Sentra sales are up 24% this year.)

Only the Altima (down 5% in March), Kia Soul, and Subaru Outback - thought by many to be an out-and-out SUV these days, managed to join the Cruze as popular cars with year-to-date sales improvements.

Ford reported its best ever Fusion sales month in America, although it still landed outside the top three. Ford's Focus was down 4% and ended March as the eighth-best-selling car. There were no Chrysler Group LLC products among the 20 top-selling cars in America. There were two Hyundais and two Kias, three Nissans, two Volkswagens, and the one Subaru.
