LARGE SUV SALES AND LARGE LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

It was roundly acknowledged on the Kia Borrego's arrival that there wasn't really much wrong with the vehicle itself apart from its timing. As a competitor for the Chevrolet Tahoe, the 2009 Kia Borrego was never going to be a huge seller because, well, General Motors owns the large SUV segment like Hyundai owns Kia.

Therefore, to see only 20 sales of the Kia Borrego in Canada in July 2010 won't surprise you. That is a substantial drop from 30 sales last July, however, quite in keeping with the Borrego's 51% drop year-to-date. Tahoe sales fell in July, too, but they're up 39% through the first seven months of 2010. Year-to-date Suburban sales have risen, too, as have sales of the GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia. That about leaves the $37,395 2010 Kia Borrego as the only large mainstream SUV to post declining sales in 2010. Kia's problem? A growing brand it may be, but the Borrego was very, very late to this party with an SUV that failed to attract attention to itself.

There is symmetry for this story among large luxury SUVs. The least among these in July, the $89,750 2010 Lexus LX570, actually increased sales by 1 unit in July 2010, but year-to-date sales of the Lexus LX are down to 109 from 147 through July. Cadillac Escalade sales have risen, though, and so have sales of the Lincoln Navigator, Land Rover Range Rover, Infiniti QX56, Lexus GX460, and the Mercedes-Benz G & GL-Class brutes. What's wrong with the LX? Well, the same could be said of the Lexus GX, and GX sales are rising, but..... to put it bluntly, jumbo luxury SUVs are supposed to be all class inside and all crass outside. The Lexus LX570 is classy inside and out.

Numbers for large SUVs of every kind, luxury or not, are in the Graphs below.

MIDSIZE SUV SALES AND MIDSIZE LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

Continuing the theme put forth in the Graphs of Small SUV Sales and Small Luxury SUV Sales, have a glance at those worst-off midsize SUVs. Now scroll further and discover the downtrodden midsize luxury SUVs. A shame, isn't it? No, really, I'm not being sarcastic. It's a shame that struggling companies like Mitsubishi pour untold thousands of dollars into producing a new vehicle just to see consumers flock to other machines, ignoring yours as though it's the modern incarnation of The Plague.

The Mitsubishi Endeavor, or Endeavour as it perhaps should be in Canada, has racked up only 226 sales so far this year in the land of Celine Dion and Sidney Crosby. That's down from a pitifully low 449 at this time last year. Through seven months, the Mitsubishi Endeavor has less than half the sales Honda's Pilot accrued in July alone. And the Pilot isn't even close to being Canada's favourite midsize SUV - that'd be the Ford Edge. Ford sells 41 Edges for every one Mitsubishi Endeavor. By the way, the 2010 Mitsubishi Endeavor has a base MSRP of $36,998. The 2011 Ford Edge starts at $27,999. The 2011 Honda Pilot has a base price of $34,820.

Volkswagen's in a bit of a different boat. Boarding a luxury ship with mainstream swimming trunks is a highly dangerous activity, but the Volkswagen Touareg price bracket (starting at $45,300 in Canada) is certainly too rich for the Pilot, Edge, and Endeavor. Volkswagen is thus compelled to compete with the $46,900 Lexus RX350, $43,085 Lincoln MKX, and $51,990 Acura MDX. VeeDub can't do it. The Touareg, even with rejigged styling and updated powertrains and a fairly beautiful interior, isn't sought after in this segment. You can only blame so much on the Touareg's age, however. Even last year at this time, July 2010 sales had reached just 68. July 2008's Volkswagen Touareg sales total was just 45; July 2007's 31.

Details on the sales of every midsize SUV and midsize luxury SUV are below.

SMALL SUV SALES AND SMALL LUXURY SUV SALES IN CANADA - JULY 2010

A decision has been made. The Good Car Guy's analysis of Canada's July 2010 auto sales picture will, more often than not, concentrate on the basement dwellers, not the inhabitants of skyscraper penthouses. This is normally the place where I expound to you the might of Ford Escape sales, the month-after-month small luxury SUV domination by the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic.

Instead, let's ask what's wrong with the Honda Element.... er, "What's wrong with the Honda Element?" We could clear this up quickly by saying, "Nothing", but that wouldn't be completely true. The Good Car Guy has always been more of an Element fan than a recommender of the Honda CR-V. The Element's style, however, didn't match the average consumer's taste in 2003. Even cleaned up as it is, the 2010 Honda Element still doesn't suit the stylistic fancy of Mr. and Mrs. Small CUV-Buyer. Besides, the all-wheel drive Element guzzles more fuel than all-wheel drive versions of the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and the all-new 2010 Hyundai Tucson.

1,990 potential Land Rover LR2 buyers either ignored the Indo-Brit SUV completely in July or thought about, perhaps drove it, might have even run the numbers on it, then forgot about it. Out of the 2,023 people who acquired a new small luxury SUV in Canada last month, only 33 went with the Land Rover LR2. Let's be honest: while GoodCarBadCar.net would consider recommending the Honda Element over many of the larger-volume mainstream sellers, the Land Rover LR2 isn't given the same nobody-loves-you-but-me spiel. The Audi Q5 is awesome. The Mercedes-Benz GLK is gorgeous. The Acura RDX handles well. Cadillac's new SRX is dramatic. Though over-nannied as much as an aristocrat's grandchildren, the Volvo XC60 is handsome and capable.

TOP 5 BEST-SELLING TRUCKS IN CANADA - JULY 2010

There's not a bone in your body that's surprised to see the Ford F-Series taking a significant bite out of this Sales Stats pie chart. July 2010, like almost every other month going back to the dawn of the Roman Empire, was a month in which Canadian pickup sales were dominated by the Blue Oval. So rather than analyze the July 2010 figures, let's have a look-see at what General Motors would need to do in order to take 2010's Best-Selling Truck In Canada award.

Through the end of July, Chevrolet Silverado sales stood at 24,103. Although that's a 41% increase over last year's first seven months, it's less than the GMC Sierra's total. Sierra sales are up 48% to 26,626. Thus, GM's pickup total through July 31st of 2010 is 50,729. Ford F-Series sales haven't risen nearly as sharply, but they were higher to begin with through July of 2009. Up 20.3% so far this year, Ford's total is 56,314. A gap of 5,585 is probably impossible to make up in the next five months, one of which is nearly two-thirds over. To do so, however, General Motors' trucks would need to out-sell the Ford F-Series by 1,118 each month. GM's July deficit was 1,631.

At least GM's mission isn't as difficult as Toyota's or Dodge's. The Toyota Tundra hasn't stolen the pickup market the way Toyota's Camry took over the sedan market in the 90s. For Fiat-run Chrysler Canada, however, the Dodge Ram did out-sell the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado in July, just not when you add GM's two trucks together.

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING SUVs IN CANADA - JULY 2010

Poor GMC. Although GoodCarBadCar.net frequently pairs platform-mates together in Sales Stats posts, it's never felt right for the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox. (They do appear together in the Small SUV Sales Graphs.) In Best Sellers lists, however, only the Sierra and Silverado are thrown together, never anything else. In July 2010, then, a month in which 2010 GMC Terrain sales totalled 1047, the Equinox's twin nearly cracks the list of Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada.... but not quite. Imagine how General Motors is feeling about their small crossover duet: the Terrain and Equinox combined to sell 2855 units, a figure that'd land GM in second spot on this list.

Ah, but first place, as always, remained in Ford's hands in July 2010. The Ford Escape, or should we say, the heavily incentivized Ford Escape, was sold nearly twice as often as its nearest competitor, the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe (Driven by The Good Car Guy on Monday).

TOP 10 BEST-SELLING CARS IN CANADA - JULY 2010

Expanding its year-to-date Sales Stats lead in Canada by 48, the Honda Civic is now ahead of the Mazda 3 by 570 units, 31,604 trumps 31,034. Among members of the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In Canada, only the Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Cobalt and Chevrolet Impala improved on their June sales figures. Year-over-year improvements were posted by the Ford Fusion, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet Impala, and Mazda 3. Basically, Honda Civic sales are falling precipitously but it's still Canada's favourite car.

Cobalts are selling with deep, deep, deep discounts at Chevrolet dealers in Canada. The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is making sure of that. You could add the Pontiac G5's 43 July sales to the Cobalt's total if you feel like it. Many of these cars are available with ultra-low 5-year financing rates at this moment - others can be had at 1.9% or 0.9%, most with cash on the hood. For the record, sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan reached 6,083 in July; when combined with the Chrysler Town & Country the total jumps to 6,327.

Do the sales numbers seem high? You wouldn't be foolish for thining so, but overall passenger car sales in Canada were down 7.8% in July 2010. However, these vehicles don't represent the "overall". These are Canada's ten most popular cars.

10 INTERESTING CARS CANADIANS DON'T BUY ANYMORE

You're not surprised when the cars you never noticed in the first place go extinct. More curious are the vehicles which capture your attention at one time or another then fail to anchor down in the Marketplace. They've long since reached their Sales Stats peak, the trend is pointing downward, their chances of regaining their old position is completely dependent on manufacturer-supplied incentives.

Below, you'll find ten interesting vehicles which no longer interest Canadian automobile buyers. For the research-obsessed, sales figures are submitted as evidence. Then read The Good Car Guy's theories on why these ten interesting vehicles aren't selling like they once were.

Audi TT
June 2007: 70
June 2008: 71
June 2009: 55
June 2010: 36
Why? Sometimes the most beautiful cars are also successful because they are the most visually shocking cars. In the Audi TT's case, nothing else looks anything like it. Though still gorgeous in second-generation form, the 2010 Audi TT can't be visually arresting more than a decade after it was first introduced. Team apathy with the fact that two of the Audi TT's competitors (BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK) are simultaneously coupes and convertibles and other rivals from Porsche, the Boxster and Cayman, are more dynamically impressive. There you have a recipe for falling TT sales.

Chrysler PT Cruiser
June 2007: 253
June 2008: 215
June 2009: 103
June 2010: 209
Why? Don't let June 2010's apparent recovery fool you. Half-year PT Cruiser sales are down 73% from 2007 levels. Chrysler dealers were off-loading stock with huge discounts in June because PT Cruiser production has come to an end. And why's that? Designers were doing amazing things with retro styling in the late 90s and in the early part of this century, but how does one go about replacing an older-feeling car? If the PT Cruiser went modern, it wouldn't be much of a PT Cruiser. If it remained retro, nothing would have changed and the love and passion people initially felt for the car would continue to dissipate. The PT Cruiser's been left in the lurch.

Dodge Viper
June 2007: 1
June 2008: 15
June 2009: 3
June 2010: 1
Why? Although Viper sales never shot through the roof, more refined machinery from other automakers have caught up to the Viper's performance credentials. Luxury and quality can be had with jaw-dropping acceleration and handling in cars like the BMW M3, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Nissan GT-R, and Porsche 911 Carrera S. Are they as rapid around a track as the Dodge Viper SRT-10? Probably not, but in 99% of driving situations, the other cars are far more enjoyable and just as much, if not more fun.

Honda Ridgeline
June 2007: 330
June 2008: 164
June 2009: 357
June 2010: 248
Why? From the beginning, the Honda Ridgeline was criticized for being too ugly and too soft. Yet there was something about the Ridgeline which made it desirable, even as many soft-roaders are sought after more fervently than heavy-duty body-on-frame SUVs. Comfortable seating for five people and an under-bed trunk, along with a measure of towing capacity, haven't made the Ridgeline successful in the Canadian market. Compared with the first half of 2008, sales are down 42% in 2010. Canadian sales of the Ford F-Series reached 10,765 in June.

Honda S2000
June 2007: 9
June 2008: 10
June 2009: 2
June 2010: 0
Why? Recently extinguished from Honda's North American websites, the S2000 ceased production in 2009 but continued to sell in low numbers through the beginning of 2010 because, well.... Honda just couldn't get rid of the $50,000+ roadsters. Initially a hit with enthusiasts and tuners, the S2000 gradually appeared bland in appearance and stagnant in performance. Honda refused to dramatically increase the S2000's output. Roadster buyers looking for something fresh and exciting had many other options. The S2000's been old news for a while.

Lexus IS
June 2007: 311
June 2008: 431
June 2009: 247
June 2010: 217
Why? The IS's 50% drop from June 2008 levels to June 2010 came at the same time its most successful Japanese rival, the Infiniti G, pushed sales upward by 20%. Apart from the wild Lexus ISF, the IS range is not really geared towards the automotive enthusiast. The 2010 Lexus IS250 is the sports sedan your mother would have designed for you: clean and classy but not wild or aggressive. Ranking seventh in its class in Canadian June sales, the Lexus IS isn't as handsome as the first-generation IS and is far too Lexus-like to be a true contender in its segment.

Mazda RX-8
June 2007: 99
June 2008: 78
June 2009: 16
June 2010: 20
Why? RX-8 sales actually perked up in June. May and April totals were significantly lower. Mazda does a great job of making all its cars fun to drive, but the RX-8 needs to take fun to another level. And it does. But seven or eight years on from its debut, the RX-8 is long past the date at which Mazda needed to up the ante with the rotary engine. Mazda should also have spent more time making the RX-8 less of a guzzler. Your run of the mill Chevrolet Corvette uses less fuel.

Nissan Quest
June 2007: 159
June 2008: 49
June 2009: 99
June 2010: 2
Why? Half-year sales of the Nissan Quest are down 98% from 2007. In 2002, Nissan displayed the uniquely designed Quest in Detroit. Wow, everyone thought, maybe this is what minivans are supposed to be. The Quest didn't catch on, however, even with big horsepower and a gigantic interior. News that Nissan is going back to the uniquely shaped drawing board for 2011 or 2012 is.... good, I guess; but it didn't work the first time around. Customers stayed with Chrysler and Dodge for the most part and sales of genuine minivans like the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo took off.

Pontiac Solstice
June 2007: 225
June 2008: 138
June 2009: 63
June 2010: 11
Why? Obviously Pontiac sales have taken a tumble because, uh, Pontiac is dead. GM's axe also took out Saturn, which killed off the Sky, Saturn's Solstice twin. Although both cars were fun to drive, good-looking, and capable performers, they lacked the storage capacity and refinement Mazda Miata owners have come to expect. The Solstice wasn't a brand rescuer, and apparently the Pontiac G8 wasn't, either.

Toyota FJ Cruiser
June 2007: 395
June 2008: 145
June 2009: 62
June 2010: 54
Why? Canadian prices for the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser start at $31,900. It may not be a direct competitor of the Jeep Wrangler, but there aren't many other vehicles with which the FJ Cruiser would naturally be cross-shopped. Wranglers have a base price of $19,095. 4-door Wranglers start at $23,495. Wrangler sales in June climbed to 1,238. In other words, every time Toyota sold an FJ Cruiser in June, Jeep sold 23 Wranglers. Poor visibility hurts the FJ's cause, too.
