Small SUV Sales In America - April 2015 YTD

The Chevrolet Equinox was America's second-best-selling utility vehicle in April 2015. In order to outsell the Ford Escape by 3086 units and the Toyota RAV4 by 5942, Equinox sales jumped 42% year-over-year.

Combined, the Equinox and its GMC Terrain generated 37,648 U.S. sales in April 2015, significantly more than the Honda CR-V.

(Granted, American Honda also sold 3972 Acura RDXs. Granted, GM also sold 6390 Cadillac SRXs.) 

April, GM says, was the company's best-ever month for crossover sales.

During a month in which nearly every midsize car posted decreased U.S. sales and the midsize car category tumbled 7%, small SUV sales jumped 15%. Subcompact utilities jumped 43%.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small cars, too, and the tweener-sized Sorento and Santa Fe are shown with midsize SUVs and small SUVs, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with midsizers, as well... because readers have wanted it both ways. GCBC has historically shown the Liberty with midsize SUVs but as the Cherokee - truly not midsize inside - replaces the Liberty, proper year-over-year comparison requires seeing the Liberty listed here with these smaller utility vehicles.
