Auto News For Monday, June 29, 2015 - Finally A New Audi A4

2017 Audi A4 front blue
Here are the five must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Monday, June 29, 2015.

FUTURE
No surprises here. In keeping with Audi's handsome but conservative design ethos, the 2017 Audi A4, the first all-new A4 since the fourth-gen B8 was introduced nearly eight years ago, looks a lot like the previous car. Although its dimensions have increased marginally, the new A4 will weigh approximately 265 pounds less than the outgoing car. The wagon is gorgeous, but we're more likely to receive a slightly elevated, be-cladded Allroad version of the Avant. Audi USA sells an average of 38,000 A4s per year.

TTAC
2015 will be the seventh consecutive year that Ford's Fiesta ends a calendar year as the United Kingdom's best-selling car. The Fiesta's lead over the second-ranked Vauxhall Corsa stands at 18,883 units through just five months. The Fiesta outsold the second-ranked car, Ford's own Focus, by 46,114 units in 2014.

REVIEW
Is the iM the answer to Scion's problems? Not if the market agrees with Car & Driver. Calling it the iMeh, C/D says, "The segment is also full of cars offering better performance," and, "If Scion is going to survive, it needs a following. And at first blush, the iM doesn’t seem good enough to build one." U.S. sales at the Scion brand are down 19% so far this year.

RECALL
In a recall not yet posted to NHTSA's main recall page, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles says 65 owners of Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos must stop driving their vehicles. The Durangos and Grand Cherokees were built in early June the recall is taking place, "because they may have been inadvertently equipped with improperly heat-treated suspension components. This condition, which was not apparent during the assembly process, could lead to component breakage, rear-end instability and/or reduced braking power." You can read more about the specifics and the means of discovering if your vehicle is involved at FCA's website or by calling FCA's U.S. customer care centre at 1-800-853-1403.

Is the new HR-V the spiritual successor to the CRX, Civic hatch, Prelude, Accord wagon, del Sol, S2000, and Element? That's the story Honda is telling in this terrific commercial.

GCBC's Most Popular Auto Sales Figures - June 2015

2015 Ford F150
As goes the market, so go the pageviews at GoodCarBadCar. The Ford F-Series is North America's best-selling new vehicle line, and the Ford F-Series' sales tracking page is the most popular model-specific sales tracking page at GoodCarBadCar.

No review was read more often during the month of June at GCBC than our 2015 Ford Mustang V6 article. That review was also the most frequently read in March, April, and May.

Readers looked at our complete May 2015 YTD U.S. brand-by-brand results page more often than any other May-related sales article on GoodCarBadCar.

Automobile manufacturers will begin reporting their June 2015 and year-to-date U.S. sales figures on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Canadian sales figures will be reported the following day, Thursday, July 2, 2015. GoodCarBadCar will be updated throughout both days with brand results from automakers competing in the United States and Canada. Later on Wednesday afternoon, June 2015 U.S. best seller lists for cars and trucks and SUVs will be published, as well, followed by Canadian best seller lists 24 hours later.

As always, sales figures for all manufacturers, makes, and models will be updated in GCBC's free searchable database of historical monthly and yearly sales data. For non-mobile users (or mobile users who have opted to view the full site by selecting that option at the bottom of the page), you can also select a vehicle, a brand, a manufacturer, or total industry figures in a dropdown menu near the top right of this page. The in-depth breakdown of June 2015 new vehicle sales begins in earnest at the beginning of July.

Watch 2015 Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T Video Review - Alex On Autos

2015 Volkswagen Beetle Hardtop
It's been nearly two years since GCBC reviewed the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible and voiced our complaints about the permafilth in the beige interior.

Today, we're showing you a video review of a hardtop Beetle, a 2015 model with the 1.8L turbocharged four-cylinder we recently tested in the Golf

This week's Alex On Autos' $25,885 tester was fitted with an automatic transmission and achieved 28 mpg during its stay with Mr. Dykes. U.S. sales of the Beetle are down 20% to less than 11,000 units through the first five months of 2015. It ranks 65th among cars in new vehicle sales volume.

As always, you won't find a more detailed, thorough, intelligent video review of the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T on YouTube.

Auto News For Friday, June 26, 2015 - 444,907 Mazdas Recalled In America

Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Friday, June 26, 2015.

INSIDE THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Rob Carrick wrote yesterday in The Globe & Mail that, "You can find economic data to back up any view at all about what’s happening out there right now. Middle-class stress, middle-class success. Excessive borrowing, manageable debt," and went on to consider luxury car sales volume as an example.

INSIDE THE SUPERCAR BUSINESS
McLaren Automotive sold 1649 cars in calendar year 2014, an 18% year-over-year increase compared with 2013. That figure included 248 copies of the P1, the brand's flagship. McLaren wants to sell 4000 cars in 2017.

TTAC
May 2015 was the best month of U.S. sales ever for GM's two subcompact crossovers, the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax. It was also the first month that the Trax, on sale in Canada since the end of 2012 but only recently added to Chevy's U.S. fleet, outsold the Encore in America.

INSIDE THE SPORTS BUSINESS
Nissan, which planted its U.S. headquarters in Nashville, bought the naming rights to the stadium where the NFL's Tennessee Titans play. That means the Tennessee Titans' stadium is named after a company which, that's right, builds Titans. In Mississippi.

RECALL
Mazda USA is recalling 444,907 6s (model years 2003-2008), RX-8s (model years 2004-2008), and MazdaSpeed 6s (model years 2006-2007) because, "The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture." And yes, Takata's CEO just apologized.

Meanwhile, Toyota is recalling 3013 copies of the 2015 Lexus NX200t because of a problem with the ABS actuator. "A component inside the actuator may have been damaged during its assembly and may cause the actuator to not function properly."

WATCH
President Obama was forced to respond to a heckler earlier this week. That's normal. The difference this time? The heckler was inside the White House. "If you're eating the hors-d'oeuvres, you know what I'm saying? And drinking the booze!"

Auto News For Thursday, June 25, 2015 - New Mini Clubman Is A True Mini Wagon

2016 Mini Clubman
Here are the seven must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Thursday, June 25, 2015, with a heavy dose on new product info after a bizarre early summer Wednesday in which multiple automakers coincidentally revealed new vehicles.

FUTURE
The Chevrolet Cruze, which will continue to be marketed with a diesel engine and will be available in a hatchback bodystyle, was shown in new, second-generation form last night. The 2016 Cruze carries on with the 2016 Malibu's styling direction but does so, not surprisingly, with less pizzazz. Fortunately, the Cruze will lose around 250 pounds. Great weight has always been the car's chief downside. The Cruze is currently America's third-best-selling small car.

MORE FUTURE
The Mini Cooper 5-Door is actually not the Mini for people who wanted the most spacious, flexible, realistic new Mini. The Clubman is back, and it brings more barn doors and nearly an extra foot of length compared with the 5-Door. It also wears Mini's latest styling direction better than any of its siblings.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze
DROPTOP FUTURE
Take one new, sixth-generation Camaro, and remove the roof. There you have it,the new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible. The roof is fully automatic. Camaro volume has fallen this year as a new Mustang took over and the faithful waited for the debut of a new Chevy muscle car.
2016 Chevrolet Camaro convertible
UNPREDICTABLE FUTURE
In Quadrifolglio trim, the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia will be a gorgeous 503-horsepower, BMW M3 fighter. The car isn't due in North America until mid-way through 2016, and don't believe anyone who tells you it will be common. But it would be good for automotive enthusiasts and the industry as a whole if a car like the Alfa succeeded. To do so, it'll need to be more reliable than Alfas of the past, it'll need to be dynamically sorted in lesser trims, and it'll need to be priced very aggressively. Concerns? In the words of Peter DeLorenzo, "You don't honestly believe that a magic switch will be "flipped" that will instantly purge decades of piss-poor quality from the Fiat car making Empire, do you? I suppose if you do, you're exactly the kind of buyer that Marchionne and his espresso-swilling minions are looking for."
2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia
RECALL
Subaru USA is recalling 72,000 Legacys, Outbacks, XV Crosstreks, and Imprezas (model year 2015) and WRXs (model year 2016) which are equipped with the Eyesight Driver Assist System. "If the switch that activates the brake lights fails, the automatic pre-collision braking component of the driver assist system will not function."

Mitsubishi is recalling 459,618 Eclipses (2000-2005), Eclipse Spyders (2001-2005), and Chrysler Sebrings and Dodge Stratuses (2001-2005), because, "In the affected vehicles, the passenger side sun visor may be folded down in such a position that, if the passenger frontal air bag deploys, the passenger side sun visor may detach."

Mitsubishi is also recalling 74,836 Eclipses (2006-2009) and Eclipse Spyders (2007-2009), for a braking corrosion issue. "Due to corrosion inside the ABS unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. In a braking event that uses the ABS, a seized valve would increase brake pedal travel and reduce braking ability."

WATCH
GCBC recently reviewed the 2015 Audi S3. The Audi RS3 reviewed here by CarBuyer's Mat Watson offers distinctly more performance than that already shockingly quick S3. And it's a hatchback.

Auto News For Wednesday, June 24, 2015 - Ford Recalls 19,095 Mustang EcoBoosts

2016 Cadillac CT6
Here are the seven must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Wednesday, June 24, 2015.

INSIDE A NICHE AUTO INDUSTRY
Mercedes-Benz's Unimog - you can call it the U-Class if you like - will return to Canada in non-road applications soon. But don't expect to see the incredibly capable beast sitting alongside C400 4Matics in Mercedes-Benz Canada's showrooms.

INSIDE THE PICKUP TRUCK INDUSTRY
Even with the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins combining to outsell the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma, small/midsize pickup trucks only account for 7% of new pickup truck registrations in Canada. That figure was much, much higher in the relatively recent past. Canada's five best-selling trucks are all full-size models.

INSIDE FORMER AUTO EXECUTIVES MINDS
Is the Cadillac CT6 going to be a success? Not according to former GM product czar Bob Lutz, who believes it's a terrific car that won't sell. "Luxury" is becoming more and more difficult to define, Lutz writes for Road & Track, and the Lincoln Continental may stand a better chance than the CT6 and reigniting interest in American luxury. In terms of new car sales in the U.S., Cadillacs currently rank 67th, 68th, 76th, and 137th.

TTAC
Land Rover USA is surging, and the Discovery Sport hasn't yet ramped up. But the impact Land Rover has in North America still falls far short of what the brand does in its home market, where Land Rover's market share this year stands at 2.8%. Land Rover earns 0.4% of the U.S. market, where the brand's sales are up 25% this year.

REVIEW
"For an honest warm hatch experience, we’d look no further." So says evo's Sam Sheehan in regards to the Suzuki Swift Sport. Here's why Suzuki died in North America.

RECALL
Ford is recalling 19,095 Mustang EcoBoosts (model year 2015) because, "Prolonged exposure to elevated underbody temperatures can cause degradation of the fuel tank and/or fuel vapor lines, which may eventually result in a fuel leak. In addition, this condition could cause seals in the parking brake cable to degrade, potentially affecting parking brake function. The Mustang, you'll recall, is selling like mad.

WATCH
Koenigseggs have always been a little bit crazy. How does the Swedish supercar market then go about making them look even crazier? By accelerating to 300 kmh and coming to a complete stop with, basically, no hands on the steering wheel. Oh, and pay attention to the braking, which seems to only take an instant.

Auto News For Tuesday, June 23, 2015 - Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback On Its Way

2014 Ram 3500 HD Crew Cab Dualie
Here are the seven must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Tuesday, June 23, 2015.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
Although GM's latest compact car, the Chevrolet Cruze, was a massive leap over the Cobalt, which was itself a massive leap over the Cavalier, it's somewhat small lineup has limited its appeal. While Toyota can make the Corolla succeed with a sedan only, many rival small cars need more than one body style. For the next generation of the Chevrolet Cruze, GM will begin selling the hatchback version seen in so much of the world in North America, as well.

INSIDE THE PICKUP TRUCK INDUSTRY
Perhaps V8s are overrated. The turbocharged diesel in Ram's heavy duty pickup trucks uses only six cylinders. But the Cummins inline-six – it's not a V – now makes 900 lb-ft of stump-pulling torque. In Canada, the overall Ram lineup set a sales record in 2014. U.S. sales rose to the highest level since 2003.

INSIDE AUTO CEO SALARIES
Nissan paid its CEO, Carlos Ghosn, $8.4 million in 2014. Still working the counter at Burger King? You're in the wrong line of work. Ghost is also the company's largest shareholder. Yet he could possibly expect a bigger raise. His pay went up 4% as Nissan's profits jumped 18%. Nissan/Infiniti now own 8.7% of the U.S. market.

REVIEW
The Tiguan lives, so why not drive it? Car & Driver recently spent time in the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line, a front-wheel-drive model. While U.S. interest in the aged Tiguan has waned over time, Canadian price cuts have made the fun-to-drive Tiguan more appealing, and it's selling better than ever north of the border.

RECALL
It's a LaFerrari recall! Ferrari is recalling 85 LaFerrari supercars because, "The affected vehicles have L32 seats as standard equipment for the passenger seat and as optional equipment for the driver seat. In a crash, the headrests of L32 seats may not absorb the required amount of energy." A separate LaFerrari recall covers tire pressure monitoring troubles.

INSIDE THE AUTO PRESS ROOM
Because Chevrolet is excited to be finishing eighth grade at a private girls school, they've issued a press release purely in emojis. Jalopnik's Jason Torchinsky attempts to translate.

WATCH
Asks Chris Harris: "Do you need anything more than a BMW 320d?" He drives it to the Nürburgring to find out. And to race an Aston Martin.

Auto News For Monday, June 22, 2015 - Current Dodge Grand Caravan Lives Through 2017

2011 Dodge Grand Caravan
Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Monday, June 22, 2015.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
Why were auto industry observers, including GCBC, skeptical of any plan that said the Dodge Grand Caravan was about to die? Windsor, Ontario's, FCA minivan plant has undergone renovations in order to build the next generation of Chrysler's minivans, but now we learn from Automotive News that Dodge will build the current, value-priced Grand Caravan for the 2016 and 2017 model years.

INSIDE THE CANADIAN AUTO INDUSTRY
The Globe & Mail makes rather obvious the point that FCA Canada isn't really selling quite as many vehicles as they say. The problem? It's not really an apples to apples comparison. We don't know what tactics other automakers are employing. We also know that no automaker's sales figures are directly comparable to another's at the best of times, since their lineups, outlets, prices, and incentives don't line up.

INSIDE CANADA'S FASTEST-GROWING AUTOMAKER
No automobile manufacturer is growing at a faster clip in Canada than the Volkswagen Group: Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche. Autofocus.ca's Timothy Cain, the founder of this site, has details on the year-to-date Canadian sales of every VW Group product.

REVIEW
Automobile Magazine compares the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, and Subaru Legacy and finds that the best-selling Camry was the worst of the bunch while the Mazda 6 buyers ignore is the best.

RECALL
72 Dodge Challengers (model year 2015) are being recalled by FCA because of a loose or missing rear mounting bolt in the driver's side air bag.

Toyota is recalling 1,973,468 Tundras, Sequoias, Corollas, Matrixes, Lexus SCs, and Pontiac Vibes from assorted model years between 2002-2007 "to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag."

WATCH
The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLK-replacing GLC is more offroadable than you'd expect. That doesn't necessarily make it a modified Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, of course.

Watch 2015 Audi S5 Video Review - Alex On Autos

Audi USA began selling the A5 family in late 2007. There have been many updates, particularly under the hood, but this is essentially the same design Audi used late in the second-last year of George W. Bush's presidency. That was a while ago.

Yet the A5 still looks current, it's still one of the best all-weather sports coupes, it's still reasonably priced, and especially for an aging model, it's still selling well.

In this week's video review from Alex On Autos, Alex Dykes drives the 2015 Audi S5. That's not the quickest A5 derivative - that'd be the RS5 – nor is it the slowest.

The 3.0L supercharged V6 is the same powerplant found in the 2014 Audi S4 that GCBC reviewed last summer and the Audi SQ5 that GCBC reviewed last autumn.

2015 GMC Canyon SLE Crew Cab 4x4 Review - Slightly More Likely To Fit In Your Garage

2015 GMC Canyon SLE V6 4x4 Crew Cab
Pickup trucks rarely make their way to GCBC Towers. Since we began routine weekly testing of manufacturer-supplied press vehicles in 2012, only five different pickup trucks arrived and departed.

All five – two six-cylinder Ram 1500 Crew Cabs, one GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab, one Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab, one Toyota Tundra Double Cab – were full-size models.

Pickup trucks account for one-fifth of the Canadian auto industry's volume but less than 5% of the new vehicles delivered to us for testing. In a way, it makes sense. Just one year ago, pickup trucks accounted for less than 4% of the new vehicle nameplates available in Canada.

THE GOOD
• Right sized outside

• Right sized inside
• Plenty of power
• All-around refinement
• Real world fuel economy
THE BAD
• Almost as costly as full-size
• Almost as big as full-size
• Not as powerful as full-size
• Almost as thirsty as full-size
• Awkward long box proportions

The 2015 GMC Canyon, however, was reintroduced along with its Chevrolet Colorado twin as an all-new design last autumn. Besides the badge, there is no mechanical, architectural, or design link between this and the first-generation Canyon, which was a successor to the GMC Sonoma.

A number of rivals that existed during the last GMC Canyon's tenure, from the Ford Ranger to the Dodge Dakota and Suzuki Equator, have vacated the North American market. GM now takes the "midsize" truck fight to the Nissan Frontier and the best-selling Toyota Tacoma.

To that fight, the GMC Canyon brings a level of horsepower and refinement that have never before been seen in the category. Yet statistically speaking, you're unlikely to buy one. The five best-selling trucks in Canada are full-size pickups. Those five trucks, along with the rare Nissan  Titan, account for 93% of all Canadian truck sales.

For the remaining 7% of buyers, however, particularly those who demand a smaller truck not only to reduce their monthly cash outlay but because they simply don't want a bigger truck, the GMC Canyon (including its Chevrolet Colorado twin) is definitely the class leader. It's the midsize truck valedictorian, the student council president, the athlete of the year, and the summa cum laude graduate. If not the outright toughest truck in town

WHAT IS IT?
Like the Colorado, the Canyon is available with four and six-cylinder powerplants, rear or four-wheel-drive, and extended or crew cabs. Our test truck was a four-wheel-drive crew cab in mid-grade SLE trim. Instead of the short, five-foot-two-inch bed of ordinary four-door Canyons, ours had the longer 6'2" bed from the extended cab model.

Thus, rather than the 128.3-inch wheelbase of other crew cabs and all extended cabs, the Canyon you see here sat atop a lengthy 140.5-inch wheelbase.

Options on our Canyon included the $1440 All-Terrain package, the $550 convenience package, the $275 trailering package (towing capacity is 7000 pounds), $780 side steps, a $525 spray-on bed liner, and $245 worth of assorted baubles.

The familiar 3.6L V6 generates 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, 53% more power and 41% more torque than the basic 2.5L four-cylinder, which isn't available in crew cab Canyons.

Canyon payload ranges from 1470 (in our tester) to 1620 pounds. Unlike many of the four-wheel-drive systems you'll find on the latest full-size pickups, there is no all-wheel-drive-aping Auto setting in the Canyon.
2015 GMC Canyon SLE interior
HOW BIG IS IT?
"Small" is not a word one would use to describe a long-box crew cab Canyon, not after seeing it fill a driveway. ("Midsize" is also something of a misnomer given that there is no class of truck smaller than the Canyon/Colorado/Frontier/Tacoma in the U.S. or Canada.)

The 2015 GMC Canyon Crew Cab stretches nearly four feet farther toward the back of your garage than Canada's best-selling utility vehicle, the Ford Escape, and Canada's best-selling car, the Honda Civic.

But the Canyon is noticeably smaller than a crew cab GMC Sierra with the Sierra's longer 6'5" bed option: 14.6 inches shorter from bumper to bumper, and more meaningfully, half a foot narrower from starboard to port. As for the four-door, long-box Toyota Tacoma, this long-box Canyon is 3.7 inches longer and a few tenths of an inch narrower. With a virtually identical wheelbase, the Canyon offers 3.2 inches of extra rear leg room.

DOES IT WORK?
You better believe it works. It's a truck, so you assume it'll tow and haul and go over things. Indeed, the Canyon tows and hauls and goes over things, despite a front air dam that'll need removing if you want to go over more things.

Yet that which separates the Canyon (and do we need to keep saying it, the Canyon's Colorado twin?) from its key rivals isn't its all-around traditional pickup truck capabilities but rather the Canyon's muted and comfortable interior, its excellent ride quality, its properly weighted and relatively precise steering, its surprisingly even-keeled handling, and its nicely modulated brakes.

Don't let praise for the Canyon's car-likeness reduce its reputation for rugged toughness – it is in these venues that modern full-size pickup trucks have similarly made such rapid progress while also increasing towing capacity and payload, improving fuel economy, and adding power.

The new Canyon is doing the same thing the F-150, Sierra, Silverado, and Ram have already done, only in a noticeably smaller package. Somewhat smaller. Moderately smaller. Okay, marginally smaller.

Undoubtedly, the Toyota Tacoma (and Nissan Frontier) will feel like the truckier truck, and it'll likely still feel that way after we drive the revamped 2016 model. Yet with so many of us now using our trucks as commuter cars, as minivans, and as primary vehicles, how can we ignore the Canyon's superior control layout, seats and seating position? Are we supposed to set aside the fact that the 3.6L is far happier to rev than the Tacoma's outgoing 4.0L V6 and that the reduction in cabin noise greatly reduces driver fatigue on longer journeys because the Canyon is too good at too many things?

From a daily driver's perspective, there is simply no comparison, not until Honda's next Ridgeline arrives. For truck users, the Tacoma's appeal relates as much to its capabilities as it does to the Toyota's legendary reliability, and that appeal is neither irrational nor without merit.

IS ANYONE BUYING IT?
Yes, and no. In comparison to the GMC and Chevrolet brands' own full-size pickup trucks, Canadians buy just one Canyon and Colorado for every nine Sierras and Silverados. But with 4104 total sales in the first five months of 2015, the GM midsize twins aren't unheard-of, outselling common vehicles like the Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru XV Crosstrek, BMW 3-Series and, yes, the Tacoma, too.

Supply remains an issue. General Motors is selling the trucks rather quickly once they arrive at dealers. That doesn't mean demand is necessarily high, as the much greater market share afforded to full-size trucks can attest. But it does mean demand is at least as great as supply, if not greater. Thus, a buyer's search to find the truck he or she wants can often be stymied, which either sends the buyer to Toyota, Nissan, the used market, or a new full-size truck.

SHOULD YOU BUY SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD?
During the majority of our time with the Canyon, we drove around the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. For a large chunk of that time, we kept the Canyon in the downtown core. Halifax is one of North America's oldest cities. That means narrow streets; oddly-shaped parking lots; and hilly, low-visibility intersections.

Of course, these geographic features could've been handled in a full-size pickup truck – look around, everybody's doin' it. But even with the full-size-like length of the Canyon, the GMC's more city friendly overall dimensions (and especially its narrower width) meant I didn't have to think about maneuvers in compact parking lots. I didn't have to think about squeezing between illegally parked cars on either side of a narrow one-way street.

Put it this way. The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor you want so badly because it reportedly counteracts the paltry circumference of your brachium? It's a full foot wider than the Canyon. Do the math: that's six inches of extra body on either side of the truck.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU PAY?
Still, it seems silly to leave a dealer having paid the same (or more!) for a Canyon than a Sierra or any other full-size truck, even if the Canyon has more options fitted, even if it is more maneuverable. It's not that much more efficient either. And a small pickup truck with leather seating and automatic climate control almost seems out of place, doesn't it?

In our books, the ideal Canyon is an extended cab model. The crew cab simply doesn't offer enough space, and certainly not enough underseat storage, to justify the near-full-size length of the vehicle or to be used as a family vehicle in the way an F-150 SuperCrew can. This is the rear seat of a compact car: adequate but not expansive.

Save a foot in length, realize that the Canyon is best when considered a two-seater with extra seats just in case, and save $1500. A 2015 GMC Canyon 4x4 Extended Cab with the $1365 V6, the $685 convenience package, a bed liner, and a soft tonneau cover currently lists for $33,000 in Canada.

Pay a little less than that and you've got yourself an exceptional truck. This isn't the first time we've said so. We named the modestly more attractive Chevrolet Colorado version to our annual Good 12 this past Christmas, the only pickup truck to crack the list.

Auto News For Friday, June 19, 2015 - Lincoln Drops MKX Price For 2016

2016 Lincoln MKX grey
Here are the six must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Friday, June 19, 2015.

INSIDE THE AUTO INDUSTRY
When Ford’s upmarket Lincoln division finally released an Escape-based entry-level luxury crossover, the MKC, it seemed likely that Lincoln would see fit to move the Edge-based MKX upmarket. And they have. The all-new 2016 Lincoln MKX will reach to greater pricing heights when fully optioned. But its base price is lower now than it was a year ago.

JALOPNIK
It’s an all-new model, so it’s no surprise at all to see the Ford Mustang outselling its rivals in the U.S. But it owns half the market for Detroit muscle in Canada, where the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Charger are built.

AUTOFOCUS
Speaking of vehicles built in Canada, there are more than 20 assembled in southern Ontario. Together they account for 17% of the new vehicles sold in Canada, down from 18% at this time a year ago. Autofocus has them ranked by year-to-date volume

TTAC
Nissan’s Maxima has been a downward trend for years. Will the release of a new model change that fact? Maxima volume declined in the U.S. in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2014.

RECALL
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled 3851 Fiat 500E - that’s the electric 500 - because the EVCU, “may set a diagnostic trouble code that may cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift to neutral.”

WATCH
You’re familiar with the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. But when the Brits at Telegraph Cars review the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, they review the wagon. And they call it the C63 AMG Estate.

Auto News For June 18, 2015 - Donckerwolke To Design Hyundais And Kias

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC
Here are the five must-read, must-watch auto news stories, review and videos for Thursday, June 18, 2015.

FUTURE
The Mercedes-Benz GLK was nothing if not distinctive. Its replacement, the GLC, looks more like a downsized ML (soon to be called the GLE) or perhaps an upsized GLA. Forget the V6, the GLC will be fitted with a 2.0L turbo four, but with more power than the 2.0L turbo in the GLA. U.S. sales of the GLK increased in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

INSIDE THE AUTO DESIGN BUSINESS
Luc Donckerwolke made his name on the Lamborghini Murcielago. Now he’ll be designing Hyundais and Kias, and eventually he’ll take over from Peter Schreyer, the man who’s attracted so much attention for Kia design that they use him in commercials.

TTAC
Honda is discontinuing the Accord Plug-In Hybrid. You won’t notice, of course, since you never actually laid eyes on an Accord Plug-In Hybrid in the wild.

REVIEW
Like your big LX platform cars but don’t care for crazily-powered Hellcat Chargers and Challengers? Keep it a bit sane, then, in the Chrysler 300 V6 AWD. Car & Driver says it, “doesn’t make you feel like you settled for the cheap seats.”

WATCH
Times have changed, and you can actually buy an Audi S3 in North America. We’ve even reviewed it. But you still can’t buy an Audi S1.

Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - May 2015 YTD

2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Land Rover Canada began selling the company's new entry-level SUV in May 2015.

The Discovery Sport picks up where the LR2 left off in an attempt to challenge big-selling small SUVs from Acura, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Lincoln, and Volvo in an arena that Land Rover helped birth with the Freelander.

We await proper Discovery Sport sales figures once the model ramps up. Only 38 were sold in its first month on the market. To become a top seller, Land Rover would need to multiply that total by about 18.

Land Rover was once a member of Ford's Premiere Automotive Group with a number of other European brands and Lincoln, which remains a Ford brand. The MKC reported its best month yet in May 2015. With 378 sales, May marked the fourth month in the MKC's 19-month history that more than 300 copies have been sold.

At the other end of the spectrum, Audi has sold more than 300 Q5s in 41 consecutive months.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains you'll see the XC70 listed with luxury cars as well as with SUVs and crossovers and the Touareg with luxury SUVs and mainstream SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.
