Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - December 2010

There are plenty of new automobiles more popular in the United States than the Cadillac SRX, but in the luxury SUV world, the SRX resides at the top with Acura's MDX and the Lexus RX. Canadians, however, for whatever reason, have not taken to the new SRX with nearly as much fervour. In fact, Cadillac's somewhat more expensive cross-town rival, Lincoln's MKX, isn't far from being twice as sought after. Given the Lincoln MKX's status as a tarted-up Ford Edge, an immensely popular utility vehicle in Canada, this shouldn't be all that surprising.

For a few hundred dollars less than the 2011 Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz Canada will sell you a basic rear-wheel drive GLK350. It is that vehicle that's grabbed hold of the hearts of Canada's small luxury SUV buyers, as the GLK out-sold the SRX by 208 units in December 2010. Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class sales were up 27.6% in the final month of 2010; SRX sales jumped 33.7%. Meanwhile, Acura had a strong #2 finish with the aging RDX but sales were actually down slightly from 337 in December 2009.

As for the aforementioned Lincoln MKX and its competitors, Mercedes-Benz was unusually strong as a 64.2% increase over December 2009 shot the M-Class up to top dog status last month. The 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML350 4Matic starts at $57,400, approximately $16,000 north of the GLK350. Acura MDX sales jumped 39.8% while Lexus faced a decline of 40.1%, a fact which didn't trouble the RX's year-end positioning atop the standings.

Midsize SUV Sales And Large SUV Sales In Canada - December 2010

General Motors Canada failed to sell their large sport-utility vehicles at the same rate as in December 2009 but still came out on top as the market share leader in the jumbo SUV segment. Chevrolet Suburban sales were down 67.7%, Chevy Tahoe sales fell 25.2%, GMC Yukon sales dropped 60%, and the GMC Yukon XL's 108% gain only brought back 65 of the 377 sales lost by its three compatriots. Ford Expedition sales were up in December, as were sales of the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia. GM's large SUV market share was a truly strong 53.5% in December 2010, but that's down from 69.4% in December 2010.

The midsize SUV sales chart has been changed for December 2010 to show individual sellers where once company heads were named. Thus, GM's Lambda triumvirate fails to display its 1407-unit might, as the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia are split up. All three, by the way, posted declining sales compared with December 2009. The 2011 Ford Edge, Lambda's lone conqueror, was up 22.8%. Chrysler Canada's still-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was up 26.4% but could - perhaps - see another challenge from the Blue Oval once the 2011 Ford Explorer catches on. Explorer sales were down 15.9% in December 2010.

Once two of the most famous names in SUV history, the Grand Cherokee and Explorer graducally slipped into relative oblivion as car-based crossovers took over. Now the Grand Cherokee is more refined than ever; the Explorer can be had with front-wheel drive; and neither ute is much of a truck. Both should put up sales figures in 2011 that far outweigh what either could muster in 2010. Anything less would be a serious disappointment.

Small SUV Sales In Canada - December 2010 And 2010 Year End

In 2001, the majority of vehicles listed in the Graphs below weren't even heard of. The Ford Escape was a new entrant known to possess above-average on-road dynamics. From Japan, the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru Forester were lighting the fire in a segment which was quickly growing out of its niche-category childhood into a major component of the North American marketplace.

Advance the calendar by a decade and, as you can see in the second chart, small SUVs, their larger but similarly-priced competition, and rugged inexpensive alternatives accounted for more than 275,000 Canadian sales in 2010. The best-seller was, as expected, Ford's Escape. Hyundai, Dodge, Honda, and Toyota tailed the Blue Oval by healthy margins. December's final order was only slightly different, Hyundai having a slow(er) month selling Santa Fes as sales of their middle-rung utility vehicle slid 17.5%.

When glancing at some poor performers in December, the all-new 2011 Kia Sportage jumps to the forefront. Styled handsomely and equipped with a startling amount of standard equipment, the Sportage isn't even selling as well as the run-out model from December 2009. Down 14.7% in December, the Kia Sportage deserves success but isn't finding any, and was off 2009's totals by 1562 units during the twelve months of 2010.

Finally, consider the Nissan Juke vs. Mitsubishi RVR battle. In the U.S., Mitsubishi's sad state of affairs means the RVR (or Outlander Sport as its named south of the border) hasn't come close to matching the Juke's level of success. Mitsubishi, however, manages in Canada. Thus, the RVR is a fierce rival for the 2011 Nissan Juke. Sales in December were nearly identical; and during the short time the two mini-crossovers were on sale in 2010, the Juke found only 24 more buyers.

Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada - December 2010

Blame it on the temperature. Winter in Canada is no time to sell convertibles, even the hardtop variety. Total combined sales of the Volvo C70, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster, Mazda Miata, and BMW Z4 were only 42. Compare that with the 60 BMW Z4s and 82 Mazda Miatas sold in June 2010.

Attributing blame to a Canadian winter doesn't cover the whole story, however. BMW Z4 sales were down 76.6% from December 2009; SLK sales dropped 33.3%; MX-5 Miata sales were chopped in half; Boxster sales were down 63.6%. Meanwhile the largest SUVs in all four of those showrooms - BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, and Porsche - all posted significant increases over December 2009.

More expensive sporty machinery wasn't exactly flying off the lots in December 2010, either. The Graph below only shows 45 sales of the eight models being tracked, down 35% from the month prior. This all happened in a market which only dropped by 3.7% from November. You tell me: would you feel like dropping $126,000 on a 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL550 at a Benz dealer in Thunder Bay, Ontario, just before Christmas? I thought not.

Minivan Sales In Canada - December 2010 And 2010 Year End

It's not inappropriate to liken the Dodge Grand Caravan's dominance in the Canadian minivan market to Michael Schumacher's 2002 Formula 1 season. I know what you're thinking: minivans and F1, whaaa? But just give it a few moments of thought and you'll start seeing the parallels.

In 2002, Scuderia Ferrari's Schumacher finished on the podium in every race, failing to finish in first or second spot only once. With six races remaining, Michael Schumacher had already secured the World Drivers Championship. Along with teammate Rubens Barichello, Schumacher's Ferrari F1 team totalled more points than all other team entrants combined. It was... devestating, both to opponents and to fans who wanted to see meaningful races at the end of the season.

In every single month of 2010, the Dodge Grand Caravan was Canada's best-selling minivan. Not once did it fail to ascend to the top step of the podium. With nine months remaining, Dodge had sold 12,601 Grand Caravans, a figure higher than that which any other minivan would attain by the end of the year. Like Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, the Grand Caravan had a partner, the Chrysler Town & Country. When the Town & Country's sales are added in to the Grand Caravan's mix, Chrysler Canada held 65% of the minivan market in December 2010; by year end that figure plunked down at 63%. You could restrict the overall market size from Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo participation, an act which would see Chrysler Canada's minivan market share rise to 74%.

Yes, every time Honda or Toyota or Mazda or Kia or Volkswagen sold a minivan - the Volkswagen being a Canadian-built Chrysler product in all but badges, by the way - Chrysler Canada sold 1.7 minivans. Again, I do feel bad for the folks who drove away with only 7/10ths of a van.

Chrysler Canada owned 13.1% of the Canadian new vehicle market in 2010. 29% of the company's sales were minivans. Now, Chrysler has improved these vans for the 2011 model year in significant ways; under the hood and inside the van, too. So could the $22,995 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan grow its Canadian minivan market share in the coming months? In the face of direct opposition from the new $29,990 2011 Honda Odyssey and high-end competition from the Dodge family's own all-new 2011 Dodge Durango, a $37,995 rugged SUV, can the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan still sell like crazy to families and fleets? Uh.... yeah. And for one more parallel, Schumacher was winning all those races for a race team owned by a manufacturer which was run by Fiat. But at the time Schumacher was winning all those races, the Dodge Grand Caravan was being built by a company which was run by Daimler, i.e. Mercedes-Benz. Now Schumacher drives for Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler is run by Fiat.

Large Luxury Car Sales And Large Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - December 2010

428 jumbo luxury sport-utility vehicles were sold in Canada in December 2010. Slightly more than one-third of those sport-utes were Detroit designs, a.k.a. "domestic" vehicles. 17.5% of the large luxury SUV market was Japanese. Nearly half were European, including 39 beautiful Land Rover Range Rovers. The 2011 Range Rover has a base price of $94,290.

Now, it's not surprising to see European automakers dominating the large luxury car segment. There were 304 of these limos sold in Canada last month - 90% were German. Whither the Infiniti Q45?

With the S-Class, CL-Class, G-Wagen, and GL-Class totalled together, Mercedes-Benz Canada sold 277 vehicles with base prices averaging $107,300.

Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada - December 2010

As the BMW 3-Series took off at the end of the year and became one of Canada's ten best-selling cars both in November and in December, other luxury players were left in the dust. It's not as though the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was found wanting in December 2010, it's just that the 3-Series and all its derivatives were simply popular on an immense level. This was actually the C-Class Benz's best month of selling in Canada since May as sales of the handsome C jumped 76% from December 2009.

Infiniti G sales were up 40%, no doubt assisted by the introduction of the 2011 Infiniti G25 to the market. The Acura TSX was up 113%. This despite the absence of the Acura TSX Sport Wagon on Canadian shores, a strange choice made by Honda Canada for a market that typically favours wagons more than neighbours to the south.

Speaking of wagons, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Wagon starts at $66,900 in Canada. Mercedes-Benz doesn't provide a split of sales data of the four bodystyles (and the CLS-Class), but Mercedes-Benz Canada was the overall best-selling luxury brand in the country in December, the E-Class being a major part of that victory. One would expect the 2012 Audi A6 to make gains in the Midsize Luxury Car sector in 2011 - A6 sales were down 34% to a trivial 23 in December. Lay only so much blame at Audi's feet, however. Although the segment's borders are tough to nail down, if taken the way The Good Car Guy presents it in the Graph below, nearly 70% of the market share is consumed by three lines from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Acura.

Midsize Car Sales And Large Car Sales In Canada - December 2010

There's a link in the Related section below the Graphs in this post where you'll be taken far, far away to the land of Best-Selling Cars. It truly is a wonderful place, but it's a place where only one of the 28 cars shown actually resided in December 2010. Indeed, Honda had a rip-roaring December, a month in which the Civic was Canada's best-selling car, the Fit wasn't far behind, and the Accord slotted in as Canada's ninth most-popular car.

As per the requests of numerous individuals, a handful of vehicles have been split up for the sake of clarity. As you'll see, the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are now separate in the Large Car Sales chart because there was no lack of space. Toyota's Camry and Venza, as well as Subaru's Legacy and Outback, are also divorced for the purposes of expanding the Midsize Car Sales chart. This certainly weakens Toyota's appearances up in here. Camry sales dropped from 1200 in December 2009 to just 511 in December 2010, barely more buyers than Chrysler found for the Sebring/200/Avenger group. Pitiful.

It's perhaps more embarrassing for Toyota that Avalon sales were up 65% in December 2010. Embarrassing how? Well, how bad must December 2009 have been if a 65% gain only nets 28 buyers? Every time Toyota Canada sold an Avalon in December, Ford's seventh Taurus buyer entered a Blue Oval showroom. Before this turns into a Let's All Bash Toyota session, take special note of the Chevrolet Malibu's 26% decline, the Impala's 69% cliff dive, and the Buick Regal's third-place finish.... among Buick cars.

Small Car Sales In Canada - December 2010

It had become increasingly clear since Mazda first put up a fight at the beginning of the year that Honda wasn't going to easily let go of its hold as the top-selling car in its segment or its Best-Selling Car In Canada crown. And though Honda appeared to have this all locked up before December 2010 even began, the Civic's crushing victory over all comers was a signal that, even with an aging model, Honda wasn't backing down in 2011, either. The Civic's lead over the Mazda 3 by New Year's Eve was 1835 units; more sales than the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, and Suzuki SX4 combined.

A look at some weak performers in December includes some surprising inclusions. Kia Soul sales remained far stronger than anything Nissan could put up with the Cube, but still, the Soul was down 19%. Cube sales were down 42%. On the year, smart sales were down 24%, but December was particularly bad with a 36% decline. Golf sales seem to be suffering a bit with the introduction of the very inexpensive 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Non-GTI Golf sales were down 43% in December; the GTI was off 6%. For proof of the Jetta's impact on the Golf, consider how overall Golf/City Golf/GTI/Jetta sales reached 2985 this December and a not insignificant 2273 in December 2009. The Jetta is picking up new buyers, for sure, but Golf sales began suddenly disappearing just as Jetta sales took off.

But if you really want to talk about rough performances in December, think Toy....oh....tah. Add up all Toyota sales in the Graph below and you'll find 3869 sales. Last year, without Scion, Toyota would've accumulated 8074 sales.

Top 5 Best-Selling Trucks In Canada - December 2010

Throw the Chevrolet Avalanche into the mix and GM's full-size pickups beat Ford's F-Series fleet by more than 1000 sales in December. Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado were up 11%; GMC Sierra sales were up 29% from 3319 in December 2009.

As Canadian Ford dealerships sold off their 2010s and waited for the 2011 Ford F-150 to arrive, sales slid ever so slightly, down 0.8% from December 2009. Dodge Ram sales represented 28.7% of all Chrysler Canada sales in December. Minivans accounted for 28.5% of Chrysler Canada sales, only 193 of which were Chrysler Town & Countrys. Another 13% of Chrysler Canada's sales were Dodge Journeys. 18.4% of Chrysler Canada's sales were actually Jeeps of one sort or another. By the time you add in the end-of-line Dodge Durango and low-volume sellers like the Nitro and Dakota, cars were apparently just 11% of all Chrysler's Canadian sales in December 2010. Good thing Dodge Ram sales were up 57%.

While the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra found 523 and 364 buyers, respectively, GM's small duo was up 52% from the same period of 2009. Chevrolet was the duo's leader with 308 Colorado sales.

Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs In Canada - December 2010

A huge 35% jump from December 2009's totals secured the Ford Escape's position atop the leaderboard among Canada's best-selling utility vehicles last month. December 2010 was a much-improved month for numerous contenders, most notably the Hyundai Tucson, up 156%. At the same time, the Santa Fe's hotness expired in Hyundai showrooms as sales of the larger Tucson alternative dropped 17%. The Santa Fe ranked sixth in December anyhow, and the drop wasn't enough to shake its year-end status as Canada's second most popular SUV, more about which you'll see momentarily.

There was worse news at Toyota. As though the company's struggle to sell cars like they did in 2009 wasn't enough, RAV4 sales tanked at a rate of 42% in December. If Toyota could've kept RAV4 sales level, their smallest utility vehicle would've been Canada's #2 SUV in December 2010. Instead, the Chevrolet Equinox - without the GMC Terrain's help, mind you - posted an increase of 56% to beat everything except the Ford Escape. 4Runner and Highlander sales were actually up for Toyota Canada last month, but volume wasn't lofty enough for Toyota's larger SUVs and crossovers to find themselves among Canada's Top 10 Best-Selling SUVs for December 2010.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - December 2010

Falling sales among Japan's best-selling small cars didn't dent their ability to remain conquerors of Canadian auto Sales Stats in December. Honda Civic sales were down 16%, Mazda 3 sales fell 8%, and Toyota Corolla sales dropped by an astounding 55% compared with December 2009. The Civic remained on top in the last full sales month before Honda revealed concept versions of the 2012 Honda Civic. Starting at $14,990, the 2011 Honda Civic is expected to live a short life.

December sales of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze were strong and at 1551 units, topped the outgoing and deeply discounted Cobalt by 920 sales. A 62% jump by the BMW 3-Series yanked a luxury car into Canada's best-selling cars list while a significant 17% bump helped the Honda Accord beat all midsize competitors. That is, if you don't include the gigantic 2011 Volkswagen Jetta as a direct Accord rival.

Nevertheless, most notable for its transition in December is the Toyota Corolla. You'll notice the absence of the Toyota Matrix on this list, too. Matrix sales dropped 52% in December, Yaris sales dropped 51%, Venza sales plummeted 53%, and Canadian Camry sales dropped at an even faster rate; down 57%. Here are Canada's 10 Best-Selling Cars from December 2010.
