LARGE CAR SALES AND LARGE LUXURY CAR SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

One month after Lexus slipped into a tie for fourth spot among large luxury car sellers in America - and being mocked for it - the Lexus LS is back on top. Porsche is up to speed with five Panamera variants. That fact helped secure third spot in the Large Luxury Car Sales Graph you'll see below. Having moved on from the drastically ugly E65 7-Series, the 2010 BMW 7-Series sold well enough in July 2010 to beat out its most famous rival, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Mercedes isn't leaving well enough alone, however. In addition to the fuel efficient S400 Hybrid, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec could pump up S-Class sales volume substantially.

On the more mainstream side of the large car category, Nissan, Buick and Ford all stepped up to the plate with a fine July 2010 for the Maxima, LaCrosse, and Taurus. No, the volume put forth by those three is nothing like that seen by the Chevrolet Impala, but don't believe for a second General Motors was making much money off deeply discounted fleet Impala sales in July. Sales of the 2010 Ford Taurus, Driven by The Good Car Guy last fall, were up 186.7% in July; up 116.4% through the first seven months of 2010.

Details on large luxury car sales and large car sales in general are in the Graphs below.

MIDSIZE CAR SALES AND MIDSIZE LUXURY CAR SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

Imagine, for a second, a really crazy scenario. Mercedes-Benz isn't a luxury car automaker, but a mainstream competitor for Honda, Toyota, and Chevrolet. The E-Class squares up against the Accord, Camry, and 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Though in reality you see the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the lower Graph as the best-selling midsize luxury car in America for July 2010, its sales figures would compare very unfavourably were the E to be found toiling against the Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima.

In fact, the purpose of sharing these two Graphs together for a change was to show the disparity between the Sales Stats of high-priced, low-volume automobiles and low-priced, high-volume cars. America's favourite midsize luxury car would only rank ninth among mainstream midsize Graph.

COMPACT LUXURY CAR SALES AND SMALL/ENTRY LUXURY CAR SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

The reinvigorated love affair between residents of the United States of America and General Motors (and rental car companies) nearly helped the Cadillac CTS fall into second spot among entry luxury cars in July 2010. Ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, way ahead of the Acura TSX and Audi A4, but 105 sales behind the Infiniti G, the handsome second-generation CTS sedan is now mightily assisted by coupe and wagon versions, one of which found its way into The Good 12 v3.0.

Of course, not surprising anyone who follows this monthly Graph with even half a glance, the BMW 3-Series was approximately 3,000 sales ahead of its next-closest rival, the aforementioned Infiniti G. The 3-Series is, once again, the best-selling luxury car in America.

Sales of the smallest luxury cars barely managed to register in July 2010. The combined Sales Stats of the four compact luxury cars listed in the Graph below would only land eighth among small/entry luxury cars in the first Graph. Though the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and Volvo C30 are good-looking cars with a measure of desirability, that meausre isn't big enough. Meanwhile, the Lexus HS250h appeared to be as unwanted in July as a prerecorded message by President Obama at a Boy Scouts convention.

SUBCOMPACT CAR SALES AND COMPACT CAR SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

Don't judge the 2011 Mazda 2's long-term potential for success on July 2010. On sale for only a few days, the month for the Mazda 2 to try and outshine its fraternal twin, the 2011 Ford Fiesta, is August. Numbers for August, hopefully numbers higher than 38 sales, will be revealed in early September after The Good Car Guy gets back from another vacation to Prince Edward Island.

Whether or not the Ford Fiesta will be able to attract large numbers of clients and secure those clients despite its high price, the influence of the Ford Fiesta didn't harm the segment leader in July. Though Nissan Versa sales dropped 9.4% from last year during the same period, Versa sales jumped from 6,762 in June 2010 to 7,725 in July 2010, a month in which we can safely say the Fiesta was known as the newest/latest/greatest/brightest/bestest.

GoodCarBadCar.net is holding out hope for the Fiesta - in hatchback form it's a looker with a fuel efficient powertrain, great dynamics, and loads of features - but with a base price 33% beyond the Versa's, the Fiesta could be in for a tough fight if it wants to take over the category.

Up a notch in size and expense, generally speaking, Toyota and Honda and Hyundai proved the merits of their respective compacts. The new Elantra, known as the Avante in other parts, isn't far off, but sales of the current Elantra are as strong as can be expected. Honda's Civic, in its eighth generation, feels like it's been around forever but still managed to out-sell the Mazda 3 by 13,526 units in the USA last month. And the Corolla, with its Matrix hatchback sibling, was the second-best-selling car in America in July.

Details on July's U.S. sales of subcompact and compact cars are in the Graphs below.

NICHE CAR SALES AND NICHE SUV & TRUCK SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

Combined U.S. sales of the Volkswagen Passat and Passat wagon failed to reach 1,000 in July 2010. Volkswagen's Passat spin-off model, the Mercedes-Benz CLS-inspired Passat CC, tallied 3,394 sales in the United States in July 2010. That's like Jeter hitting 600 home runs before A-Rod.

In other Niche Car Sales news, the Kia Soul was the Korean automotive brand's number two model in July, out in front of the Kia Forte but behind the 2011 Kia Sorento. While overall BMW's Mini brand was down 11-2% in July, sales of the regular Mini Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks were up 2.9% to 3,125. Blame the Mini Convertible (down 32.8% to 573) and Mini Clubman (-36.1% to 628) for family problems.

Among SUVs and trucks, the Wrangler brought the bacon home for Jeep in July. Only the Grand Cherokee came close to the Wrangler in overall sales. Jeep Wrangler sales were up 121% in July and are up 5% to 56,192 year-to-date. While you're amazed that only 210 residents of the United States acquired Hummers in July, The Good Car Guy is wondering how Hummer found 210 buyers in the span of one month. Similarly the Acura ZDX: is 578 Acura ZDX sales a low figure or, given its dreadfulness, rather lofty?

Details on the Passat CC, Soul, Mini, Wrangler, Hummer, and ZDX are in the Graphs below along with numerous other niche market vehicles.

CHEVROLET vs FORD, BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL - JULY 2010 IN THE USA

Recent news - and a flood of recent opinion pieces - state that a huge chunk of these Chevrolet and Ford sales are going to fleets. Although "fleet sales" can mean numerous things, think Avis and Hertz and you'll get the picture. Where last year at this time you saw lower sales of the Blue Oval and Bow Tie brands, much of their July 2010 increase is due to fleet sales, sales with negligible profit.

Regardless, The Good Car Guy's Sales Stats are much colder and harder than that. Which automaker put more cars on the road in July? This is what we're here to find out. In the six categories examined in this GoodCarBadCar.net Graph, both Chevrolet and Ford are victorious in three. The 2012 Ford Focus and 2011 Chevrolet Cruze could present a totally different picture to the one displayed by the current Focus and Cobalt. Don't be surprised either way if Ford Fiesta sales stagnate due to high prices or take off because, well.... it's a really nice car.

Of course, Ford's all-conquering pickup truck, the F-Series, helps push Ford's overall total higher. Rumour has it Ford will rely on the 2011 Explorer and the updated Edge to carry forth the midsize torch: Flex sales are low enough to make Ford think the model has no future beyond 2013. This is interesting given the incredibly strong sales of GM's Lambda platform's most conservatively-designed member, the Chevrolet Traverse.

Chevrolet vs Ford sales from July 2010 in the USA are below (even if the chart title does say it's Canada.)

SMALL SUV SALES AND SMALL LUXURY SUV SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

Where you see incredibly strong Kia Sorento sales now, is it possible to see incredibly strong Kia Sportage sales alongside? The 2011 Sportage looks better than its fraternal twin, the Hyundai Tucson, is priced similarly, and is set to work the same magic on customers that the Sorento's been displaying for the last few months. But with a less expensive and still strong rival sharing showroom space with the Sorento, can Kia's middle child continue selling like hotcakes? After all, the Kia Sorento was on America's Best-Selling SUV list in July.... and not for the first time.

When the Austrian-built BMW X3 first arrived on North American shores for MY2004, it was over-priced, under-equipped, harshly-suspended, and undesirable. Fortunately for BMW, the X3 didn't have to face off with competitors from Infiniti, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, or Acura. With the EX, Q5, GLK, XC60, and RDX in the way, and a vastly improved competitor from Land Rover in the form of the LR2, BMW X3 sales have tanked. Spartanburg, South Carolina, is home to BMW X3 production for generation F25, a better-looking X3 which should take the fight to other small utility vehicles. But can the 2011 BMW X3 conquer the Cadillac SRX since General Motors moved its Cadillac crossover down a notch in size and price? It appears unlikely.

For all the Sales Stats on small SUVs and crossovers and small luxury utility vehicles, too, check out the Graphs below.

MIDSIZE SUV SALES AND MIDSIZE LUXURY SUV SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

Don't be fooled: as a trio, GM's Lambda platform crossovers (Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia) are wildly successful; more likely to sell than any other midsize utility vehicle in America. As an individual nameplate, however, the Chevrolet Traverse was America's favourite midsize SUV/CUV in July 2010. Traverse sales accounted for 9,977 Lambda sales in July, beating out the Ford Edge by a few hundred. The Enclave (5,039) and Acadia (5,574) did alright on their own behalf.

Don't be surprised if the 2011 Ford Edge ups the Sales Stats ante more aggressively in the coming months. 2011 Edges make 285 or 305 horsepower a very real possibility along with an efficient 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder. Edge sales were up 18.9% in July. Granted, the 2011 Ford Explorer could eat away at some potential Edge sales, as well.

In the luxury segment, the Lexus RX350 and Lexus RX450h remain as Lexus's most effective sales tool. Conquering not only every other midsize luxury utility vehicle but every other vehicle in Lexus's showroom, too, the RX350/RX450h duo was about three times more popular than the otherwise-quite-successful BMW X5 in July.

Details on mainstream midsize SUV sales and midsize luxury SUV Sales Stats for the month of July 2010 are in the Graphs below.

LARGE SUV SALES AND LARGE LUXURY SUV SALES IN AMERICA - JULY 2010

This is the first time large luxury SUVs and large mainstream SUVs have been placed into the same post. For quite a few weeks now, Sales Stats have been released by GoodCarBadCar.net in condensed form, Graphs sharing space with Graphs. Rather than link large luxury SUVs with luxury SUVs of the midsize and small variety, it seemed like a good idea to display the contrast in luxury and non-luxury for July 2010 auto sales info.

What becomes more obvious when seen in the light of each other is the supremacy of the GMT 900 platform. Encompassing the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade, GMT 900 gathered up 16,740 sales in July. But wait a second: those 16,740 sales don't include the Chevrolet Avalanche, Cadillac Escalade EXT, or General Motors' closely related pickup trucks. Nevertheless, 16,740 sales off one platform - if eligible - would have placed GMT 900 second among America's best-selling SUVs in July 2010.

More importantly to General Motors, sales of the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon were higher in July than in July 2009 or in June 2010. Suburban and Yukon XL sales didn't measure up to last month's figures but were better year-over-year.

July 2010 Sales Stats on every large SUV and large luxury SUV are in the Graphs below.

U.S. SALES OF MINIVANS AND MUSCLE CARS - JULY 2010

My, how the tide has turned. Not long ago, General Motors gave up the minivan fight - a fight it had long since lost to Chrysler and Dodge - and refocussed on muscle car wars, a war it had surrendered to Ford about a decade prior.

Ford, on the other hand, has revitalized its muscle car, the iconic Mustang, while turning out its van engineers to work on on the Transit Connect, a tasty little commercial thang. Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro sales, enarly equal in America in July 2010, are about as strong as a moderately successful minivan.

Chrysler's muscle car, the 300-based Dodge Challenger, is nowhere near as popular in the United States, but Chrysler has the benefit of building the planet's most popular minivans. The Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan are being vociferously challenged by the 2011 Toyota Sienna, and an all-new Odyssey may strengthen Honda's position on the lower Graph as well. Details on July 2010 sales of minivans and muscle cars in the USA are found below.

U.S. SALES OF SPORTY CARS AND PREMIUM SPORTY CARS - JULY 2010

BMW's 6-Series went on a rampage in July 2010 with sales climbing from 174 in June to nearly 1,000 last month. Among members of the premium sporty car class, the Jaguar XK also posted a rapid increase in sales: 47.2% over June 2010.

Down a notch in price and prestige, the Audi A5 is a dominant player. (Canada's version of this Graph also includes the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but Hyundai USA doesn't separate the Genesis Coupe's sales from overall Genesis totals.) The A5's strength is seen more clearly in the light of the gorgeous-but-no-longer-trendy Audi TT. For every TT sold, Audi sells more than seven A5s.

Details on Sporty Car Sales and Premium Sporty Car Sales for the month of July 2010 in the U.S.A. can be seen in the Graphs below.
