February 2014 Canada Passenger Car Sales Rankings - Top 136 Best-Selling Cars In Canada - Every Car Ranked

2013 Hyundai Veloster grey
Canadians registered fewer than 42,000 passenger cars in February 2014, a drop of nearly 4000 units compared with February 2013. Passenger cars accounted for just 39% of the auto industry's overall volume in February, way down from 44% in the same period one year ago.

It started at the top... (and now we're here?) The best-selling Hyundai Elantra reported a 6% drop. The Elantra's 3327 sales were still enough to land the compact Hyundai ahead of the Honda Civic, but the Elantra's loss was just a sign of what the car rankings had in store for us.

Through the first two months of 2014, car sales are down 7%, a 6000+ decline in the number of units sold. This isn't simply something we blame on poor weather and the inability of Canadians to shovel out their driveways in order to get to the new car store. Canadians registered a massive increase in the number of SUVs and crossovers sold in January and February. Admittedly, they're certainly not all gas guzzlers, particularly the ones Canadians are actually buying: Escapes, CR-Vs, RAV4s, Rogues, and the like.

For companies which, like Hyundai, specialize in cars, this spells trouble. Hyundai's Santa Fe and Tucson are popular, but their crossover range is small. Hyundai relied on its car division - Accent, Elantra, Equus, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Sonata, Veloster - for 71% of its overall volume in February 2013. But as car sales at Hyundai slid 13% in February 2014, the car division generated just 67% of the brand's total volume. The brand's crossovers were up 7%, but that wasn't nearly enough to stop Hyundai's Canadian dealers from selling 646 fewer new vehicles last month than in February 2013.

The fact that Canadians bought 131 fewer Velosters in February 2014 than in February 2013 won't spell doom and gloom, not by itself. But Mazda sold 333 fewer 6s and 536 fewer 2s. Dodge sold 376 fewer cars. Ford's Focus was down by 362 units; Chevrolet sold 258 fewer Malibus; Kia sold 237 fewer Optimas.

There were exciting improvements introduced in October's rankings of vehicle sales. Prior year figures now include the actual numbers from last year, not just the percentage increases/decreases from last year. As a result, we now include vehicles like the Lexus LFA and Audi A3, nameplates which collected sales in February 2013 but not during February 2014.

At any time, click the Rank column to return to the original format. If you're on a mobile device, you may need to choose the full version of the site (at the bottom of the page) in order to use the sortable function.

Reminder: these are 2014 year-to-date rankings, but you can sort cars by February volume by clicking the February 2014 column header, or you can rank cars by improvements or declines using the % columns. Or, most importantly, you can list automakers together by selecting the Car column header.

As always, you can find historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these vehicles by selecting a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page.
