Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In Canada - February 2014

2013 Mazda CX-9 black
It's getting worrisome. One month? No big deal. Things happen. Two months? That sucks. Three months? Questions arise. Four months - how long will this go on?

Highly regarded in GCBC's review eleven months ago, winner of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's Car Of The Year title, the Mazda 6 has been  a part of this list of Canada's 20 worst-selling vehicles in each of the last four months.

Fortunately, February's results, in which the Mazda 6 ranked 17th because of its 67% year-over-year decline, was far better than January's results. In January, 6 sales were down 80% and it ranked as the fourth-worst seller. In other words, February sales of the Mazda 6 were down sharply, but it wasn't as bad as January's free fall.

It's hard not to pay a lot of attention to the 6's harsh decrease when discussing Canada's worst sellers: the 6's poor health is unexpected. (Or perhaps not. Each Mazda 6 has been well-received by pundits but oft-rejected by consumers.) The Chevrolet Avalanche is dead; the Chevrolet Colorado has not yet been rebirthed, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently undergoing a replacement phase. Even other high-volume (or supposedly high-volume) cars like the Volkswagen Golf have excuses: the old Golf is dying off, we want the 2015.

But the 6, like its CX-9 and 2 siblings which rank even higher on this list of worst sellers, aren't supposed to be selling rarely. Yet they are anyhow. And the 6's decline isn't the only story. It's not as though Mazda awas leading the class by leaps and bounds and this decline brings the 6 back down to Earth. It wasn't a common car at this time last year.

Month after month, we end up talking about how odd it is that Canadian consumers don't want a new Mazda 6. Indeed, Canadian consumers don't really want midsize cars all that much. But the 6 is an especially rare midsize car, and it appears as though too many midsize buyers don't know what they're missing.

GCBC doesn't just rank vehicles in terms of their year-over-year swing. The second table below profiles low-volume vehicles. The 6 misses out on that list by 153 sales. Phew.

You can always select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both Canada and the United States. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but you can also find related links at the Best Sellers page.
