Minivan Sales In America - 2004 Year End

2004 Toyota Sienna
America's minivan market grew by 36,000 units in calendar year 2004, a 3.4% year-over-year increase. The Chrysler Group, with two active nameplates, owned 34.8% of the minivan market, level with their 2003 share.

GM's share declined sharply as their total minivan volume dropped 22% to 157,169 units. The Ford Motor Company sold 120,979 minivans, including 17,407 Mercurys, but that was far from the 129,236 sold in 2003 when the Windstar was the prominent Ford minivan. Overall, domestic manufacturers owned 59.8% of America's minivan market.

Big gains were produced by the Toyota Sienna and Nissan Quest, both of which were new for the 2004 model year. Indeed, the Sienna was America's second-best-selling minivan, as Honda's Odyssey failed to produce meaningful growth in the expanding category.

Complete 2004 sales figures for every minivan sold in the U.S. are below. Together, they accounted for 6.6% of the overall new vehicle industry's volume.

Minivan Sales In America - 2003 Year End

2004 Dodge Caravan red short wheelbase
America's minivan market shrunk by more than 60,000 sales, or 5.3%, in 2003 as the overall market slowed, as well, albeit at a much slower rate. New vehicle sales in the United States were down 1% year-over-year in 2003.

The Chrysler Group controlled much of the minivan category in 2003 with 34.8% market share, but that was down from 36% in 2002. Overall, domestic brands - including Chevrolet with the Astro and GMC with the Safari - owned 65.5% of the minivan category.

The best-selling minivan in America was the Dodge Caravan. The second-ranked Honda Odyssey was 79,331 sales back of the Dodge, which was still available in short and long wheelbase variants.

General Motors sold 199,954 minivans, equal to 18.6% of the overall minivan market. GM no longer markets a minivan in America.

Ford sold 131,449 minivans in 2003. Ford no longer sells minivans in America.

6.4% of the new vehicles sold in the United States in 2003 were minivans, down from 6.7% in 2002. Complete 2003 sales figures for every minivan sold in the U.S. are below.

Minivan Sales In America - 2009 Year End

2008 Chrysler Town & Country
As America's new vehicle market collapsed to just 10.4 million units in 2009, a 21% year-over-year sales decline, minivan sales dropped by 30% to just 447,867, a decrease of 194,799 units.

The Chrysler Group's market share in the segment grew from 37.7% in 2008 to 39.1% in 2009 despite dramatic declines - from both the Town & Country and Grand Caravan - and the fact that the Honda Odyssey was the best-selling minivan in America for the second consecutive year.

Complete U.S. Minivan Market Sales Figures - 2010 Year End

Overall, minivans accounted for just 4.3% of all the new vehicles sold in the United States in 2009, down from 4.9% in 2008. The minivan market suffered the loss of GM vans in 2009, the near disappearance of the Hyundai Entourage. Volkswagen's decision to sell a copy of the Dodge Grand Caravan had little bearing on the segment.
